You’ve made it to Day 3 — and now it’s time to feed your fungi! 💪
Just like plants need soil and nutrients, mushrooms need the right substrate to grow strong and healthy. Understanding substrates is key to boosting your mushroom yield and avoiding contamination.
What is a Substrate?
A substrate is the material that provides nutrients, moisture, and structure for the mycelium to grow and spread. Think of it as the mushroom’s dinner plate!
🍂 Common Substrates for Mushroom Cultivation:
1. Straw – Cheap, easy, great for oyster mushrooms.
2. Sawdust – Works well for shiitake and other wood-loving mushrooms.
3. Coffee Grounds – A sustainable, urban option rich in nutrients.
4. Manure + Compost – Nutrient-rich but trickier to manage (used for button mushrooms). 💩
How to Pick the Right Substrate:
Start with straw or coffee grounds for beginners — easy to find and low risk.
