    The Timbuktu Library in Mali was home to over 700,000 ancient manuscripts — covering science, mathematics, medicine, philosophy, and law. These works were handwritten by African scholars and stored carefully in this city of learning.

    Many people think Africa lacked written records, but Timbuktu proves that the continent was rich in knowledge long before the West caught up. Sadly, many of these manuscripts were hidden to protect them from invaders and colonizers.
