1 day agoArchbishop Benson Idahosa is widely regarded as the father of Pentecostalism in Nigeria. Born on September 11, 1938, in Benin City, he rose from a humble background to become one of the most influential Christian leaders in Africa. He founded the Church of God Mission International in the late 1960s, which became a major platform for the spread of Pentecostal Christianity across Nigeria and beyond.
Idahosa was known for his bold faith, charismatic preaching, and emphasis on miracles, healing, and prosperity. He was instrumental in transforming the perception of Christianity in Nigeria, making it vibrant, dynamic, and publicly engaging. Through his leadership, many Nigerian pastors and church leaders were mentored and inspired to establish their own ministries.
He also played a key role in using media, especially television, to reach wider audiences with the gospel message—a pioneering move at the time. His international connections and preaching tours helped put Nigerian Pentecostalism on the global map.
Idahosa founded Benson Idahosa University and was deeply committed to education, leadership development, and social impact. Until his death in 1998, he remained a towering figure whose legacy continues to shape the growth and influence of Pentecostal churches in Nigeria today.
