On one operation, Kibera and his team had stolen a coffin and attempted to move it. The intended vehicle didn’t arrive, so they hijacked a newspaper van. Police were alerted and opened fire. He describes one moment: inside the coffin, sweating, thinking he was done for, but using silence and fear (others thought he was a dead body) to avoid detection. Then he jumped out when police and bystanders lifted the coffin, and fled. HubPages+2The Standard+2
Lesson: This story shows the value of instinct, quick thinking, and also how scary the consequences of bad choices can become. It was a turning point.
4. Change of heart and redemption
After many of his partners died (shot or lynched), he had what he calls a change of heart. The loss of close people, fear of death, guilt over disturbing graves weighed on him. Nairobi News+2NABADO+2
In ~2003, he surrendered to the authorities. He turned in his gun, pleaded guilty, served a six‑month sentence at Industrial Area Prison. NABADO+1

Lesson: Redemption is possible. Even when someone has gone far in wrongdoing, they can choose to change. Taking responsibility (surrender, confession), making sacrifices (giving away ill-gotten wealth), can be powerful acts of transformation.
