Chapter 9: the girl in red

By the time I got to the back of the library, Luca was already there — leaning against the wall like he belonged to some movie scene.

His hoodie was down today, and his messy black curls danced in the afternoon breeze.

He smiled when he saw me.

Not a wide smile — just a small, knowing one.

“Thought you wouldn’t come,” he said.

    “I told you I would.”

We stood there in a strange, peaceful silence. But even peace didn’t last long in this story.

“You know,” I said, breaking it, “you kind of attract attention.”

    His brows raised. “Do I?”

“Half the girls in my department talk about you. Especially one.”

    “Which one?”

Before I could answer, a voice cut in.

    “Esther, right?”

    I turned.

Standing a few steps behind us was Zina.

Red hair wrap. Red nails. Red lips. Red everything.

I'd seen her around. She was in Luca’s department — loud, confident, and way too sure of herself. And rumor had it… obsessed with him.

    “Hi,” I said cautiously.

She ignored me and walked straight to Luca.

“I’ve been calling you,” she said to him, brushing a hand on his arm like she owned it.

“I didn’t see it,” he replied, stepping back slightly.

She turned to me now. Her smile was sharp. “You’re everywhere these days, aren’t you?”

I opened my mouth, but no sound came out.

    Zina didn’t wait.

“I’m just saying,” she added, her voice still sugary, “not everyone appreciates nosy girls hovering around things they don’t understand.”

Luca stepped in between us. “Zina, stop.”

But the damage had been done.

She gave me one last glance and walked off, hips swaying like a warning.

“I’m sorry about that,” Luca said quietly. “She’s... complicated.”

I forced a smile. “Seems like she really likes you.”

He looked at me — serious, calm.

    “But I like you.”

    The world tilted.

For a moment, I forgot the dreams, the curse, the shadows.

    But then… just then…

    I saw her.

    That woman in black.

    Across the courtyard. Watching us.

She didn’t move. She just stood there… waiting.

I turned to tell Luca — but she was gone.
