Filmmaker and author Laju Iren says creativity isn’t enough to succeed in the film industry — understanding the business side is just as important.
Speaking at the Creative Economy Stage of Moonshot by TechCabal, she explained that storytelling can change hearts, but sustainability requires profit awareness.“You can’t conquer any industry without understanding it. We must figure out the profit aspect,” she said.
Iren noted that many underestimate how costly film production is, urging creatives to embrace collaboration and adaptability.
She shared how her team used a virtual cinema model to distribute their movie Loving Amanda, earning back their full budget through subscriptions.“If you want to try virtual cinema, plan your marketing well, focus on pre-orders, and protect your work from piracy,” she advised.
Another speaker, Collette Otusheso, said she went into filmmaking to tell stories about her roots and to help young talents through platforms like Accelerate TV.
Both speakers agreed: passion is great — but every creative must also learn how to make their art profitable.
