Aliko Dangote recently announced ambitions to make Africa self-sufficient in fertiliser within 40 months, expanding his Lagos plant to more than double capacity and outpace Qatar in urea production. This bold move aims to slash imports—currently at over 6 million tonnes—and conserve over US$ billions in foreign exchange, benefiting both farmers and the naira.

Yet serious hurdles remain: inadequate transport networks, port congestion, and budget overruns could slow the project. Still, if Dangote delivers, he'll not only boost agriculture, but also create jobs and strengthen national infrastructure—arguments for why investment in African-led industrialisation matters.
