A strong democracy is not only measured by elections and political transitions but also by the level of unity it fosters among citizens. In a diverse country like Nigeria, democracy and national unity must work together to ensure stability, progress, and shared prosperity. Nigeria is home to multiple ethnic groups, religions, and cultural identities. While this diversity is a strength, it can also become a source of tension if not properly managed. Democracy provides a framework for inclusion, where every group has a voice in governance and the opportunity to participate in national decision-making. However, national unity goes beyond representation. It requires fairness, justice, and equal treatment of all citizens regardless of background. When people feel excluded or marginalised, trust in democratic institutions weakens, and divisions deepen. This is why equity and inclusion are essential to sustaining unity in a democratic society. Elections also play a key role in national unity. When conducted transparently and peacefully, elections can bring people together around a shared national purpose. But when electoral processes are flawed or contested, they can create division and mistrust among citizens. Education and civic awareness are equally important. Citizens who understand democratic values such as tolerance, respect for diversity, and peaceful coexistence are more likely to contribute positively to national unity. Schools, families, religious institutions, and the media all have roles to play in promoting these values. Strong institutions further reinforce unity by ensuring that justice is applied fairly and that government actions are consistent and transparent. When institutions are trusted, citizens are more likely to accept outcomes and work together for national development. As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, the challenge is clear: democracy must not only guarantee political participation but also strengthen the bonds that hold the nation together. A united Nigeria is possible when democracy is inclusive, fair, and focused on the common good of all citizens.
