N$1.4 Billion Road Upgrade Between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay – But Town Roads Crumble The coastal highway upgrade between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay covering MR44, MR36, and TR2/1 is one of Namibia’s largest road infrastructure projects, with a total value of N$1.4 billion. Construction began in 2016 to convert the route into a dual carriageway freeway, including 12km of new road and four major bridges. While the inter-town link nears completion, residents of both towns continue to battle potholes, worn-out streets, and neglected road infrastructure within their local urban areas. In Swakopmund, many internal roads remain severely degraded, particularly in Mondesa, Tamariskia, and the DRC. In Walvis Bay, areas such as Kuisebmond, Narraville, and even parts of the central business district have become increasingly difficult to navigate due to uneven surfaces and poor stormwater drainage. An Environmental Clearance Certificate for the freeway project was renewed in 2023, yet no similar attention has been paid to residential roads where most citizens live and drive daily. While the N$1.4 billion freeway promises faster travel between towns, many question when similar urgency will be applied to the crumbling inner roads where life actually happens.πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘
