12 hrs agoThe Federal Government has confirmed that English Language and Mathematics remain compulsory subjects for all students taking their Senior School Certificate Examinations.
This clarification came on Sunday after confusion trailed the recently reviewed admission guidelines for tertiary institutions.
The Ministry of Education explained that the new policy, which adjusts the admission requirements for some university and polytechnic courses, does not exempt any student from registering or writing the two key subjects.
According to the ministry, the decision was made to correct wrong interpretations surrounding the new O’Level admission framework.
It stated that while the reform allows flexibility in subject combinations for certain fields of study, it does not remove the need for students to take English and Mathematics during their exams.
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, said that the reform aims to make tertiary education more inclusive by allowing students with strengths in specific areas to gain access to higher institutions without being limited by unrelated subject deficiencies.
The ministry further stressed that all students must continue to sit for both English and Mathematics as they form the foundation of sound academic development.
It also urged parents, schools, and education stakeholders to rely only on verified government sources for updates on education policies.
