59 days agoA Finnish court has sentenced Nigerian-born political activist Simon Ekpa to six years in prison after finding him guilty of offences linked to his activities both in Finland and abroad.
The judgment was delivered by the Päijät-Häme District Court, which held that Ekpa used his influence, particularly on social media, to promote actions considered unlawful between August 2021 and November 2024.
Ekpa, who hails from Ebonyi State, Nigeria, relocated to Finland in 2007 and later became a Finnish citizen. He has also participated in local politics in Lahti under the National Coalition Party. In 2022, he declared himself “Prime Minister” of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), an organisation campaigning for self-determination.
According to the court, Finnish investigators looked into his online broadcasts and statements, which were seen as encouraging disobedience and disruptions in southeastern Nigeria. The case also included charges of financial misconduct. While Ekpa denied the major allegations, he admitted to a minor tax-related offence.
The ruling is not yet final as Ekpa has the option to appeal in a higher court. His legal team has hinted they may challenge the judgment.
