Lake Nakuru was once world-famous for its spectacular flocks of flamingos, sometimes numbering over 1 million. These birds, particularly the lesser flamingo, are drawn to the lake by the abundance of algae that grows in the alkaline water. The flamingos often form a brilliant pink fringe along the lake’s shores, creating one of the most iconic wildlife spectacles in Africa. The best time to witness this display is during the dry season when water levels are lower and algae concentrations are higher. However, environmental changes have affected algae growth, causing flamingos to migrate to other Rift Valley lakes.
