    ‎I was 16.

‎The first time I ever fainted from hunger.

‎It was after school, under that hot Zaria sun.

‎I hadn’t eaten since the night before just garri and salt water.

‎That day, I didn't even have transport home.

    ‎So I walked.

‎My feet were burning, the soles worn thin from washing and rewashing.

    ‎Then I felt dizzy.

‎I sat under a mango tree by the roadside and dropped my head.

    ‎People passed.

    ‎Cars drove by.

    ‎Nobody stopped.

‎Then this boy from my class walked past.

    ‎He paused. Looked at me.

‎Then sat beside me didn’t say a word. Just sat.

‎He opened his lunch bag. Brought out bread and zobo.

    ‎We shared it silently.

‎Then he noticed my slippers were almost broken in half.

‎He removed his own and handed them to me.

    ‎I said,

    ‎What about you?

    ‎He smiled and said,

‎I know this road. My feet will understand.

    ‎And he walked home barefoot.
