*Title:* How I Pretended to Be Rich and Almost Got Married

One day, I decided to test a theory: "Fake it till you make it." So, I borrowed my friend's flashy shirt, sprayed a little too much perfume, and borrowed my cousin's car—a Lexus he doesn't even let his dog touch. I pulled up to a wedding like a celebrity latecomer. Everyone noticed. Including her—Amanda, the beautiful daughter of a well-known rich businessman.

We talked. I faked a British accent. Why? I don't know. I told her I was into "international trade," which in reality meant selling fairly used phones online. I even used big words like “synergy” and “global outreach.” She was impressed.

Within two weeks, Amanda was calling me “Babe.” I was sweating financially trying to keep up with the rich lifestyle. I borrowed clothes, took pictures in hotels I didn’t sleep in, and updated my WhatsApp status like I was on a yacht every weekend. But in truth, I was sipping pure water in my room.

Then her father called me for dinner. I borrowed a suit, practiced my fake accent, and even Googled what rich people talk about. I got to the house, and immediately, I knew—I was in trouble. The house had a gate bigger than my whole street.

During dinner, her dad asked what exactly I do. I said, “I’m into importation and distribution of smart commodities.” He said, “Oh great! I’m in the same line. Tell me your CAC registration and tax ID.” I smiled, drank water, and said, “Excuse me, I need to take a call.”

I went outside, got in my Uber, and told the driver, “Drive like we’re escaping a movie scene.” I blocked Amanda the next day and changed my WhatsApp DP to a Bible verse.

Moral of the story? Pretending to be rich will not only drain your wallet—it might get you married before you can pay your next NEPA bill.
