How Lagos Became the Giant of West Africa – From Fishing Village to Mega City

Lagos wasn’t always the loud, fast, money-hungry city we know today.

It started as a *small fishing village* called *Eko*, ruled by the Aworis and later the Benin kingdom.

In the 1860s, the British took over and made it a colony. Why? Because Lagos had *port access* — perfect for trade.

By 1914, when Nigeria was formed, Lagos became the *capital* — attracting businesses, civil servants, foreigners, and hustlers.

Even after the capital moved to Abuja in 1991, Lagos didn’t slow down.

Instead, it became the *economic heartbeat of Nigeria* — from oil money to import/export, to tech, movies, and music.

Today, Lagos alone has over *20 million people*, making it one of the most populated cities in Africa.

And despite the traffic and wahala, it remains the *land of opportunities* for dreamers and doers.

Moral: A small place can become great if the people hustle with vision and grit.
