🧶 How to Crochet a Granny Square (Beginner-Friendly)
A granny square is one of the most classic and fun things to crochet. You can use it to make blankets, bags, tops, and more!
🛠 What You’ll Need:
Yarn (any color, but start with medium size yarn)
Crochet hook (5mm is great for beginners)
Scissors
Tapestry needle (for finishing)
📚 Basic Stitches You’ll Use:
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
dc = double crochet
yo = yarn over
🔁 Let’s Get Started: Step-by-Step
✅ Round 1:
1. Make a slip knot, then chain 4.
2. Join the ends with a slip stitch into the first chain to form a ring.
3. Chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet).
4. Do 2 double crochets into the ring, then chain 2.
5. Repeat: 3 dc, ch 2 — do this 3 more times into the ring.
6. Slip stitch into the top of the beginning ch-3 to close the round.
➡️ You now have 4 sets of 3 dc (called clusters) with ch-2 spaces at each corner.
✅ Round 2:
1. Slip stitch into the next 2 stitches until you reach a corner space.
2. In the corner space, do:
ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc.
3. In the next corner space, do the same:
3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc.
4. Repeat in each corner.
5. Slip stitch to the top of the first ch-3 to close.
✅ Round 3 (and beyond):
1. Slip stitch into the corner.
2. In each corner, do:
3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc
3. In each side space (between corners), do:
3 dc only
4. Continue this for as many rounds as you want.
5. When finished, cut yarn and weave in the ends.
🎨 Tips:
Use dif
ferent colors for each round to make it look fancy!
Make many granny squares and stitch them together for bags or tops.
