Peaceful.
Still.
But not in Nigeria.
Here, the night never sleeps.
At 1AM, you expect loneliness.
Instead, you get crickets screaming from the bushes.
You hear frogs croaking proudly.
And yes, the birds?
Silent — as they should be.
Because if a bird starts singing at night,
That one is just creepy.
Everywhere is pitch black.
Yet the sound never stops.
In the distance, a church is shaking the heavens with night vigils.
And by 5AM, the mosques pick up where they left off —
Calling the living and the sleepy alike.
It’s funny, isn’t it?
In a country where you often feel invisible,
The night makes sure you’re never really alone.
Listen closely and you’ll hear:
A car speeding past on the highway.
A club somewhere, refusing to shut down.
Neighbours locking their gates.
Babies crying. Generators humming. Cats hissing. Life breathing.
You lie in bed thinking it’s just you and your thoughts…
But the whole country is up with you — in sound.
Night doesn’t sleep in Nigeria.
It simply changes shifts.
And even in the darkest hour,
There’s always noise reminding you: You’re not alone.
And with that, I bid you goodnight.
