“Is it worth staying here, or should I Japa while I can?”
With rising unemployment, insecurity, poor infrastructure, and unstable governance, it’s hard not to feel stuck.
Over 70,000 Nigerians left for the UK, US, and Canada in 2023 alone.
And that’s just those with legal records — many more left through student visas or routes of desperation.
The #Japa wave is real — and growing.

But here’s the other side of the coin:
For every person that leaves, there are millions who can’t.
We need to ask:
If everyone capable leaves, who will be left to rebuild?
Some Nigerians are staying — and thriving.
Examples include:
Tech startups like Paystack, Flutterwave, and Moniepoint
Agri-entrepreneurs building wealth from land
Creatives monetizing on platforms like Konnect, YouTube, and CapCut
Yes, Nigeria has problems — but it also has potential.
220M+ people = massive local market
Untapped industries: renewable energy, export agriculture, edtech
Diaspora remittances are #1 in Africa ($20B+)
Youth population = power, if properly harnessed

So, is Japa bad? Not at all.
Sometimes it’s the right call.
But we must stop treating it like the only path to success or sanity.
Not everyone will leave.
And not everyone that leaves will find the peace they expect.
If you’re still in Nigeria, your presence is not a curse.
It’s an opportunity.
Build. Connect. Influence.
Even if you leave someday, make sure you grew something where you were first planted.
