2 days agoKenya is experiencing a significant surge in mpox cases, with the Ministry of Health reporting 314 confirmed infections as of August 1, 2025. This marks a substantial increase from 68 cases in April. The outbreak has now spread across 22 counties, with Mombasa leading at 146 cases, followed by Busia with 63 cases .
The majority of cases have been reported in the past six weeks, coinciding with the peak of the outbreak. Of the total cases, 222 individuals have fully recovered, while five have succumbed to the disease, resulting in a case fatality rate of 1.6% .
The outbreak is primarily concentrated along the Mombasa–Malaba highway, a major transportation corridor linking Kenya to other East and Central African countries. High-risk groups, including truck drivers, sex workers, and individuals employed at or near trucking stopovers, have been disproportionately affected. Sexual transmission is suspected in a significant number of cases .
In response, health authorities have intensified surveillance efforts, focusing on high-risk areas and populations. Public health measures, including vaccination targeting those most at risk, are being implemented to curb the spread of the virus .
The Ministry of Health continues to monitor the situation closely and urges the public to adhere to safety guidelines and report any symptoms promptly to health facilities.
