Part 2: The Road of Burning Feet

The truck was full — 60 people, mostly boys. Some younger than me. No seats. Just bodies pressed together like bags of rice.

We crossed Burkina Faso in silence. The sun was brutal. In Niger, we stopped. A man opened the back and shouted, “Out. Walk.”

We were in the desert. No signs. Just sand and heat. One man fell. They left him.

Joseph gave me his last water bottle. “You first,” he said.

I drank one sip. Just one.

At night, the cold bit our skin. We slept on rocks. Some boys cried for their mothers in their sleep.

In Sabha, Libya, we were taken to a dark house. They said we had to pay $500 more. Or work.

Joseph picked tomatoes for a local man for 3 weeks. His hands were cut and swollen.

I cleaned a big villa. One man there tried to touch me. I hit him with a broom and ran.

One kind woman helped me hide for two days. She gave me bread, a charger, and peace.

We escaped the house at night. We found the boat man. He said:

“Boat leaves tomorrow. One chance only. Take it or stay in this hell.
