Life as a student in Nigeria: The real struggle

Being a student in Nigeria is more than just reading textbooks or passing exams — it’s a full survival experience. If you haven’t faced it, you might think we’re exaggerating, but every Nigerian student knows the struggle is real.

Let’s start with the lecture halls. One lecturer, 300 students, and only 50 chairs. The rest of us? Standing, sharing seats, or sometimes sitting on the floor just to “attend class.” And when the lecturer finally enters, they’ll say: “This topic is simple. I expect you to read the rest at home.” 😩

Then there’s NEPA wahala. Imagine trying to read for an exam at night and boom — light goes off. You end up reading with candlelight, rechargeable lamps, or your phone’s flashlight until the battery dies. And when the light finally returns, it’s usually 5 minutes before you want to sleep.

Don’t forget exams. You’ll study hard, memorize everything, and still the question paper will look like it came from another planet. Meanwhile, that one student who never comes to class will somehow finish early and submit first. 😂

Now, let’s talk about hostel life. If you’ve ever stayed in a campus hostel, you deserve a national award. From water scarcity to roommates who “borrow” your food without asking, the drama never ends. Cooking in hostels is like a reality show — you fight for space, struggle with small pots, and hope the food finishes before your gas or kerosene does.

And then there’s strikes. Just when you’re finally getting serious with school, ASUU will announce a strike. Months go by, students sit at home, parents complain, and dreams get delayed. By the time school resumes, you’ve forgotten half of what you read last semester.

But here’s the funny part: in the middle of all these struggles, Nigerian students are still some of the most creative and hardworking people. We make memes out of our pain, hustle on the side to support ourselves, and somehow, still find time for friendships, love, and fun. 🎒

Yes, life as a student here is tough, but it also shapes us. It teaches patience, resilience, and survival skills we carry for life. Years from now, when we look back, we’ll laugh at the madness and be proud that we survived the real Nigerian student experience.
