37 days agoThe word “luxury” has been so abused in Nigeria that it barely has meaning anymore. These days, every vendor slaps it on their product or service as an excuse to inflate prices. Once you see “luxury” on the label, just know your wallet is about to cry whether or not the quality actually good.
Take shawarma for example. Shawarma is a street food. Let’s be honest, it’s not caviar, it’s not steak, it’s not 5-star dining. It’s bread, chicken, veggies, and sauce. Simple. Now unless I’m sitting in a 5-star restaurant where the ambience and service are part of the experience, I don’t see why shawarma should cost ₦16,000.😠
Because at that point, it better come with a full goat head inside, a bottle of wine on the side, and maybe a complimentary Uber ride home.
What Nigerian vendors call “luxury” these days is simply code for: we increased the price, deal with it. The word has shifted from meaning “elevated quality and exclusivity” to simply “we’ve found another way to squeeze your pocket.”😞
In the end, maybe the real luxury in Nigeria is managing to buy things at their normal price without getting scammed by marketing grammar.😁
