    Mau Forest Connection

Lake Nakuru’s primary water sources originate in the Mau Forest Complex, the largest indigenous forest in East Africa. The rivers feeding Lake Nakuru—such as the Njoro River—depend on rainfall and watershed conditions in the Mau. Unfortunately, decades of deforestation, illegal logging, and settlement have degraded the forest, leading to reduced river flow, soil erosion, and sedimentation in the lake. Conservation of the Mau is directly tied to the sustainability of Lake Nakuru’s ecosystem. Reforestation and protection of the Mau catchment are priorities for conservation groups, government agencies, and international donors seeking to restore natural water cycles.
