    Preparing Land for Small-Scale Ugu Farming

    As we all know, land must be cleared before any farming can take place. So today, I want to share one or two important things to consider when clearing a small piece of land for farming.

    In my eagerness to prove to myself that I could actually do it (farming), I hurriedly bought Ugu seeds before clearing the land. That decision set me back and caused some avoidable losses.

    Here are a few lessons I learned:

    1. Choose the Right Land
      The land for Ugu farming should have good soil moisture and fertility. Finding such land can be a challenge, especially in urban or built-up areas. But one key thing to look out for is security—the land must be safe and accessible.

    2. Clear the Land Early — and Do It Yourself If Possible
      It's better to clear the land before buying your seeds. Why?

      • Hiring someone to clear a small space may cost you money, and there’s no guarantee the crop will do well. That can lead to losses at the beginning.

      • Clearing the land yourself helps you understand the soil better. You’ll learn how water is absorbed, how to prepare the soil, and how best to manage it.

      • Clearing at least 1 to 2 weeks before planting gives you time to prepare, rest, and plan properly.

      • Some soils are filled with stones, and early preparation gives you time to sort them out and improve the soil structure.

    Farming is an interesting and rewarding venture, especially if you take your time to learn and prepare. I wish you success on your own journey!
