Nigeria just sent egusi into space yes, the melon seed! 🚀🌱 Talk about combining tradition with sci-fi. First-ever West African food item to orbit the ISS!”

In a historic mission led by Dr. Temidayo Oniosun in partnership with Jaguar Space and The Karman Project, Nigeria has sent egusi seeds aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 to the International Space Station. This unique experiment will help scientists understand how microgravity and radiation affect germination, viability, and molecular responses. The seeds’ post-flight analysis will take place at the University of Florida and IITA, Ibadan. It’s the first time any West African agricultural product has ventured into space and it’s as legendary as it sounds.
