If there is one critical issue Nigeria must address to strengthen its democracy before 2027, it is electoral credibility. The trust citizens place in the electoral process determines the legitimacy of leadership and the stability of governance. Elections are the foundation of democracy. When citizens believe their votes count, participation increases, civic engagement improves, and elected leaders are seen as legitimate representatives of the people. However, when elections are questioned due to irregularities, manipulation, or lack of transparency, confidence in the entire democratic system weakens. Strengthening electoral credibility requires more than technology alone. While innovations such as electronic transmission of results and biometric verification are important, they must be supported by strong institutions, well-trained personnel, and strict enforcement of electoral laws. Another key aspect is reducing electoral malpractice, including vote-buying, intimidation, and manipulation of results. These practices distort the will of the people and produce leaders who may not reflect public choice or priorities. Institutional independence is also essential. Electoral bodies must operate without political interference and must be adequately funded and protected to carry out their duties effectively. At the same time, the judiciary must be able to resolve electoral disputes fairly and efficiently to maintain public confidence. Civic education is equally important. Citizens need to understand their rights, responsibilities, and the importance of protecting their vote. A politically informed electorate is less likely to be manipulated and more likely to demand accountability. As Nigeria prepares for future elections, improving electoral credibility should be treated as a national priority rather than a political debate. Without trust in elections, democracy loses its meaning and effectiveness. Ultimately, a stronger democracy begins with elections that reflect the true will of the people. Fixing this single issue would significantly strengthen Nigeria’s democratic future.
