8 days agoA student of Taraba State University, Endurance Achikare Igbagri, has issued a heartfelt public apology to the Catholic Diocese of Jalingo and the wider Christian community following backlash over her choice of costume during the school’s recent Costume Day celebration.
Photos and videos that surfaced online showed several students dressed in various themed attires — but one particular outfit caught public attention. Ms. Igbagri, alongside a few others, appeared in costumes resembling Catholic religious garments, including those traditionally worn by Reverend Sisters and priests. The display was quickly deemed offensive and disrespectful by many members of the Catholic Church and other Christian faithfuls, sparking widespread criticism on social media.
In response to the outrage, Ms. Igbagri took responsibility for her actions and penned an official apology letter addressed to the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Jalingo, Reverend Fathers, Catholic faithfuls, and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
In her letter, she expressed deep remorse, describing her conduct as “deeply thoughtless, disrespectful, completely unacceptable, and done out of ignorance.” She emphasized that she never intended to mock or ridicule the Catholic Church but now realizes the gravity of her actions and the pain they caused.
The incident has since reignited conversations about cultural and religious sensitivity among students and the importance of exercising respect during creative or social events within academic institutions.
