1️⃣ Life in Nigeria is getting tougher by the day — and for many families, even cooking a simple meal has become expensive.
Cooking gas prices have hit record highs nationwide, leaving homes struggling to cope.
2️⃣ In Abuja, Lagos, and other major cities, a 12.5kg cylinder of gas now sells between ₦17,000–₦19,000, up from around ₦10,000 just a few months ago.
In some areas, 1kg costs as high as ₦2,500! 😩
3️⃣ Why are gas prices so high?
👉 Continuous rise in the dollar rate
👉 Import dependency for LPG
👉 Inflation & poor supply chain
👉 Market exploitation by some dealers
👉 Insecurity disrupting transportation routes
4️⃣ For the average Nigerian, this means tough choices — cook less, or switch to firewood and charcoal.
Sadly, many are now going back to those alternatives, creating health and environmental risks. 🌫️
5️⃣ The ripple effect is massive:
💔 More spending on basic needs
🍚 Food prices keep rising
🕯️ Electricity & fuel costs add more pressure
💸 Salaries remain stagnant
6️⃣ Even though Dangote Refinery recently cut its ex-depot price to ₦760 per kg, most people haven’t felt the impact. Retailers still sell at double the rate.
7️⃣ The cost of living crisis isn’t just about gas — it’s about survival.
When families can’t cook, can’t afford transport, and can’t buy enough food… it’s beyond “hard times.”
8️⃣ What needs to change 👇
✅ Strengthen local LPG production
✅ Regulate and monitor gas marketers
✅ Provide relief for low-income households
✅ Support job creation & income stability
9️⃣ Nigeria needs more than policy talk — we need real action that puts citizens first.
People shouldn’t have to choose between cooking and eating.
