The fog clung to the streets like a living thing, swallowing every sound except the distant echo of their footsteps. Zara gripped the key tightly, her knuckles white. Damian stayed close, scanning every shadow, every corner, as if the darkness itself might spring to life.
“I don’t like this,” Zara whispered. “It feels… like we’re being followed.”
Damian nodded grimly. “You’re right. I saw someone—someone watching us back there.”
Suddenly, a soft rustling came from an alleyway to their left. Both froze. A figure stepped out, tall and silent, face hidden beneath a hood. The figure didn’t speak, only held out a hand. In it lay a small envelope, sealed with a wax stamp that bore a symbol Zara didn’t recognize.
Damian moved instinctively in front of her. “Stay back,” he warned.
The hooded stranger dropped the envelope at Zara’s feet and retreated into the fog without another word. Hesitating only a moment, Zara picked it up and broke the seal. Inside was a single folded note and a small, intricately carved medallion.
The note read:
"The key unlocks more than doors. Some truths are better left buried. But now, you must choose: seek them, or lose everything."
Zara’s eyes widened. “Damian… what is this? Who sent it?”
Damian shook his head. “I don’t know… but whoever it is, they know more than we do. And this medallion… it feels… alive.”
A sudden chill ran down Zara’s spine. “We can’t ignore this. We have to find out what it all means… before it finds us first.”
From the mist, another shadow moved. This time, closer. Faster. Something or someone was coming. And this time, there would be no running. But the question is who or what?
