1 day agoMaryam Abacha, the widow of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has once again dismissed allegations that her late husband embezzled billions of dollars while in power.
In an interview with TVC, which was monitored by The Whistler, Mrs. Abacha challenged the Nigerian government and media to present credible evidence showing that her husband diverted public funds.
> “Who saw the money? Who signed for it? Where is the proof?” she asked, questioning the authenticity of long-standing corruption claims.
General Sani Abacha, who ruled Nigeria from 1993 until his sudden death in 1998, is often accused of overseeing one of Africa’s largest cases of public fund misappropriation. Since his death, over $3.6 billion linked to his administration has been recovered from foreign accounts in Switzerland, the United States, Jersey, and the United Kingdom.
However, Maryam Abacha insists the story has been exaggerated for political reasons. She claims that some of the funds her husband kept for Nigeria’s benefit were later misused by others after his death.
> “The money my husband left for Nigeria disappeared in just a few months. People don’t talk about that,” she said.
She also questioned why Nigerians continue to blame her husband decades after his death.
> “Why are people still talking about him 27 years later? Is it tribalism, religion, or something else?” she asked.
Mrs. Abacha urged Nigerians to stop spreading misinformation and encouraged the media to be fair and truthful in their reporting.
> “People are not that bad. For them to still talk about Abacha means he must have been powerful and loved by Nigerians,” she remarked.
She further described her husband’s era as one of greater economic control and national stability, insisting that Nigeria’s finances were stronger under his leadership.
> “Where did he steal the money from? Nigerians just believe everything they hear,” she added bluntly.
Concluding her remarks, Mrs. Abacha called for national unity and mutual respect among citizens, saying no single leader defines Nigeria.
> “Babangida did not make Nigeria, Abacha did not make Nigeria, Abiola did not make Nigeria. We are all important,” she said.
Since 1999, Nigeria has continued to recover funds allegedly linked to the former leader’s regime — including a $311 million transfer from the U.S. and Jersey in 2020 — as part of global anti-corruption efforts.
