1 Corinthians 4:2 “Moreover it is required in stewards that a man be found faithful.” Stewardship is the responsibility of managing what belongs to another. In the Christian faith, everything we have—time, money, abilities, opportunities, and even life itself—belongs to God. We are not owners; we are managers appointed by Him. True stewardship is not about how much we have, but how faithfully we manage what has been entrusted to us. 1. God Is the Owner of All Things Stewardship begins with recognition: nothing we have is truly ours. “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” – Psalm 24:1 When we understand God’s ownership, pride reduces and responsibility increases. Money is no longer for selfish control but for purposeful assignment. 2. Faithfulness Is the Requirement God does not first ask for greatness; He asks for faithfulness. “It is required in stewards that a man be found faithful.” – 1 Corinthians 4:2 Faithfulness means: Using resources wisely Avoiding waste Being consistent and trustworthy Managing small things well before expecting more 3. Accountability Is Inevitable Every steward will give account of what was done with what was given. “So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.” – Romans 14:12 This truth brings seriousness to how we spend money, use time, and handle opportunities. Nothing is invisible before God. 4. Wisdom in Financial Management Good stewardship requires practical wisdom: Budgeting income properly Avoiding unnecessary debt Saving for future needs Distinguishing needs from wants “The wise store up choice food and olive oil.” – Proverbs 21:20 Wisdom protects resources from waste and instability. 5. Giving Is Part of Stewardship A good steward does not only manage for self but also channels resources for God’s work and for others. “Honor the Lord with your wealth.” – Proverbs 3:9 Giving is not loss; it is recognition that God is the source and others are also part of His plan. 6. Diligence Multiplies What Is Given Stewardship is not passive. What is managed well grows. “The hand of the diligent will rule.” – Proverbs 12:24 Diligence includes hard work, planning, discipline, and persistence. 7. Avoid Waste and Carelessness Wastefulness is poor stewardship. God values intentional use of resources. Even small resources matter when placed in God’s hands, as seen when Jesus fed the multitude with a few loaves and fish (John 6:12).
