When bone-dry greenware is loaded into a kiln, it undergoes a dramatic, irreversible chemical transformation known as the bisque firing. This initial firing slowly heats the ceramic pieces to temperatures ranging between 900°C and 1000°C. As the temperature climbs, the remaining chemically bound water within the clay structure is driven out, permanently altering the material at a molecular level. During this process, the raw clay undergoes a critical phase transition: The organic materials and impurities present in the earth burn away completely. The individual clay particles begin to sinter, partially fusing together at their contact points. The fragile clay permanently transforms into a durable, porous ceramic material called bisque ware. The timing and speed of this firing are incredibly precise. If the kiln heats up too quickly, the trapped chemical water can turn to steam instantly, causing the pottery to explode under pressure. Once the bisque firing is complete and the kiln slowly cools over a full day, the resulting pots are vastly different from their greenware state. They are no longer water-soluble, meaning they will not dissolve back into mud if they get wet. Instead, they are left highly porous and structurally sound—acting like a rigid, microscopic sponge that is perfectly prepped to absorb the liquid glaze in the next stage of production.
