In my SS1 first term,I thought I was old enough to get a girlfriend, and decided to ask a girl in my class out.

I had told all my friends of this, and planned it to be on a Wednesday afternoon, I can't forget that day.

We were done for the day and school had dismissed, everyone was going home.

The school street led to a T junction, where I'd take the left street with my friends home, but her house was on the right street.

So it happened that she had headed home, and when I noticed I told my friends to wait for me at the T junction so that I'd go and propose to her.

The wished me luck, I confidently ran after her and stopped her before she entered her home gate.

“Ah prosper, what are you doing here?”

“Favor,I want to tell you something”

    “What?”

    “Erm I—”

I couldn't produce the remaining words.

She had already known what I wanted to say from the look on my face and immediately began going into her house.

    “Wait”

She didn't listen and closed the gate on my face.

I went back to my friends and told them, they told me that I should just continue, she'd yield.

The next day in school, she started avoiding me.

I'd try talking to her and she'd move away.

I told a friend,(a girl who's also her friend)everything, after some days of her consistent avoidance.

I told her to help me ask her what was wrong.

She came back to me after break that day and told me this:

“Prosper, favor said that you should stop disturbing her and if you disturb her again she'd report you.”

I got scared, I had a lot to lose if I was reported to be chasing a girl and punished for it.

I was the best student of my set,the newly elected assistant head boy, potential head boy in the future.

Chief speaker for the best debate team in my school, I was a favourite of most teachers, well respected amongst all teachers and students.

I was always used as an example for students then with “can't you be like prosper?” Being a common line during admonishing rounds by many teachers.

Looking at all these,I couldn't imagine losing my reputation over her so I began to avoid her instead.

It was a weird feeling I had during that period.

But next term we resumed she had left to a new school outside Lagos.

I was glad and sad at the same time.

I became more reserved and focused and by the time I was in SS 2, I had made more achievements, became the SP, president of the JETS club in my school,I had won very Big competitions for the school that even my principal now spoke to me like a staff, not a student.

Only very few people knew what happened between me and favor and I was glad that such was the case.

I thought then that being an academic reputable high flyer and having a girl friend were irreconcilable and so I just focused on my books.

Until SS 2 second term, I was conducting an assembly that morning of resumption week when this very beautiful angel walked in, a new girl got admitted, her name was Helen.
