Buhari, who served as Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, passed away at the age of 82 after a brief illness at his residence in Daura, Katsina State.
The news of his death was officially confirmed by the presidency through a solemn statement that praised his lifelong dedication to Nigeria’s unity, security, and anti-corruption fight. Tributes poured in from global leaders, past presidents, traditional rulers, and citizens, acknowledging his deep impact on the nation’s political and military landscape.
A national mourning period of seven days was declared, with flags flown at half-mast across the country. His body was laid in state at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where dignitaries paid their last respects before being flown to Daura for final burial rites.
In accordance with Islamic traditions, Muhammadu Buhari was buried the same day following Janazah prayers held at the Central Mosque in Daura.
