Not when she smiled. Not when she said “I’m fine.”
Not even when she laughed loudly in public, hands over her face like she was really in the moment.
Because she wasn’t.
She was always somewhere else.
In a city she hadn’t been to yet.
In a memory that never happened.
In a version of herself she hadn’t met
but missed deeply.
They said she was distracted. Absentminded.
She said she was tired.
Of loud people. Of heavy things. Of the kind of silence that didn’t feel peaceful.
In her head, though?
Things made sense.
Words were softer. Goodbyes had explanations.
And sometimes… the people she missed still called. She built a room in her mind where it was always calm. She filled it with candles she hadn’t bought, books she hadn’t read, and letters she never sent.
That was home.
So if you saw her smiling at nothing, or staring past you…
She wasn’t being rude.
She was just visiting her favorite place again.
The one nobody else could touch.
And sometimes, the safest place to be… is in the one you built yourself.
Thanks for listening.
Don’t forget to breathe, dream, and take up space even if it’s in your own head.
