From the late 20th century onward, Africa witnessed a powerful spiritual revival through the rise of Pentecostal and Charismatic Christianity. This movement transformed the religious landscape of the continent, making Africa one of the most vibrant centers of global Christianity today.
Origins and Spread
Pentecostalism first entered Africa in the early 1900s through missionaries influenced by the Azusa Street Revival in the United States.
African believers quickly embraced the message of the Holy Spirit, miracles, healing, and prophecy.
By the 1970s and 1980s, local pastors began founding indigenous Pentecostal and Charismatic churches that spread rapidly across cities and villages.
Major Churches and Leaders
In Nigeria, churches like the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Christ Embassy, Winners’ Chapel, and Deeper Life Bible Church gained millions of followers.
In Ghana, the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) and Action Chapel International became influential.
