The Last Assignment
Setting: A small university room with one table, two chairs, a lantern, and scattered books.
Characters:
Tunde – Final year student, tired and broke
Mira – His coursemate, optimistic but frustrated
Mama Tunde (Voice only) – His mother calling from home
SCENE 1
Lights dim. Tunde is seated, staring at a blank paper. Mira enters, holding Indomie and egg.
MIRA:
Tunde! You're still here? You’ve not gone to submit the final assignment?
TUNDE:
Mira, if I tell you say my brain don crash, you go believe? I’ve rewritten the intro three times.
MIRA: (sits beside him)
Guy, na just write-up. No be thesis! You want first-class, no be so?
TUNDE: (sighs)
First-class without food? Without data? Even my brain dey lag like Glo network.
Mira laughs, opens the Indomie, offers him a bite.
Eat first, think later. Na small energy dey make person reason.
TUNDE: (reluctantly eats)
Thank you, Mira. Sometimes I feel like giving up.
You're not alone. We’re all tired. But we’ve come too far to quit.
SCENE 2
Tunde’s phone rings. It's his mother. He picks up.
Hello, Mama.
MAMA (Voice, emotional):
Tunde, your uncle say make we sell one goat so you fit buy data. He say education no get duplicate.
Tunde tears up silently.
Tell him I said thank you. I’ll make it count.
SCENE 3
Mira stands, grabs a pen, and slaps the table.
Enough tears. You’ll write that assignment, submit it, and graduate for all of us.
Tunde wipes his eyes. He nods. Lights fade as they both lean over the paper.
