He called her every night.
Even after she stopped answering.
Every night at 9:15 PM, he'd sit on the same old couch with his phone in one hand and hope in the other. And every night, it went straight to voicemail.
"Hey... it's me again. I know you probably won’t hear this, but... I miss you."
His voice cracked more with each message.
Six months had passed since the accident. Six months since that icy road, that phone call that never came. Six months since he lost the only person who ever made him feel understood.
Her number was still active. He couldn't bring himself to delete it.
He couldn’t let go.
They met in high school.
She was loud and full of life.
He was quiet, invisible in the crowd.
She saw him. She chose him.
He always asked why, and she always said,
"Because you're the only one who listens when I speak and hears me when I don’t."
Now he listens to silence.
Friends told him to move on.
Therapists told him to accept the loss.
But grief doesn’t follow schedules.
It shows up in the middle of the night, in songs on the radio, in shadows that look too familiar.
Then one night, the call didn’t go to voicemail.
It rang. Once. Twice. Three times.
His heart froze.

"This number is no longer in service."
That night, he didn’t call again.
He just sat there.
Quiet.
Tears falling onto a phone that would never ring again.
And that’s when he knew:
She was really gone.
