Some historians say the word "Africa" comes from the Latin word "Africus", meaning "sunny" or "warm". Others say it came from the Berber tribe *"Ifri"*, meaning cave dwellers, who lived in North Africa.
The Romans first used “Africa” to describe just a small part of modern-day Tunisia after defeating Carthage in 146 BC. Over time, the name expanded to represent the whole continent.
Interestingly, ancient Egyptians called it “Kemetic land” (land of black people), while some Arabic maps once labeled it *"Ifriqiya."*
So, the next time someone says “Africa,” just know — that name has deep roots and rich history.
