Young people are often described as the future of a nation, but in a democracy, they are also a powerful force in the present. With a large percentage of Nigeria's population made up of youths, their participation in governance and nation-building will significantly influence the direction of the country's democracy. For many years, young Nigerians were viewed mainly as voters. Today, they are increasingly becoming advocates, policy influencers, election observers, community organisers, entrepreneurs, and even political candidates. Through civic engagement and technology, young people now have more opportunities than ever to contribute to national conversations and hold leaders accountable. One of the greatest strengths of Nigerian youths is their ability to mobilise around issues that affect society. Social media platforms have enabled young citizens to raise awareness, educate others, and demand greater transparency in governance. When used responsibly, these tools can strengthen democratic participation and encourage constructive dialogue. However, the power of young people extends beyond online activism. Democracy requires active involvement in voter registration, elections, public consultations, community development projects, and political processes. Young Nigerians must move from being observers of governance to becoming participants in shaping it. Challenges such as unemployment, limited political opportunities, and voter apathy can discourage youth involvement. Yet, withdrawing from the democratic process only weakens their influence. Meaningful change often begins when citizens engage consistently and responsibly. As Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day, young people should recognise the important role they play in building a stronger nation. Their ideas, energy, creativity, and commitment can help address many of the challenges facing the country. Nigeria's democratic future will not be determined solely by today's leaders. It will also be shaped by a generation of young citizens willing to participate, lead, and take responsibility for the future they desire.
