Zara’s chest heaved as the hooded figure’s knife hovered too close. Her instincts screamed at her to run, but her feet stayed rooted to the wooden pier.
From the corner of her eye, she saw Damian. He hadn’t moved since the figure appeared — his jaw was clenched, his hands balled into fists. But he wasn’t saying a word.
“You really don’t know… do you?” the hooded figure muttered.
Zara forced her voice steady. “Know what?”
The scarred man tilted his head. “About your parents.”
The air left her lungs. She staggered back a step. “My parents are dead,” she whispered.
“That’s the story you were told.” His laugh was low, sharp, and cruel. “But accidents don’t leave that kind of trail.”
Zara’s heart pounded. She turned to Damian, desperate. “What is he talking about?”
Damian’s eyes flickered, just for a second, with something unreadable — pain? Or guilt? He opened his mouth, then shut it again.
“You see?” the hooded figure sneered. “Even he won’t tell you.”
“Tell me what?” Zara demanded, voice cracking.
The figure leaned in close enough that she could see the deep scar running down his cheek. “I’m just following orders. You’ll understand soon.”
He slipped something cold into her palm — a jagged, rusted key — and then stepped back into the fog.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket.
Unknown Number: “He’s just a pawn. But so is Damian. Be careful who you trust.”
Zara’s head spun. She stared at Damian, clutching the key so tightly it bit into her skin. “Damian… what are you hiding from me?”
Damian finally spoke, his voice rough. “It’s not what you think.”
