Chapter 3: The Curse of Gagangwagara

Long ago, the forest had been ruled by a powerful spirit queen named Gaga-Ngwagara, guardian of life and death. When men tried to conquer her forest for its hidden gold, she cursed them — binding their souls to the trees.

Okiri realized too late that his father had been one of those men. The charm he wore was a fragment of the queen’s own spirit, stolen to protect him as a child. Now, it had led him back to her.

“You must return what was taken,” said the queen’s shadow, her voice now soft and sorrowful. “Or the curse shall claim you too.”

The forest groaned around him. Vines twisted up his legs. The ground split open, revealing faces — human faces — crying from the earth.

With trembling hands, Okiri tore the necklace from his neck and cast it into the darkness. A blinding light burst through the trees, and the voices ceased.
