    The Village Headmaster and the Generator Wahala

     

    In the small village of Igbajaland, where goats had right of way and fowls could interrupt PTA meetings, there lived a headmaster called Mr. Okon — tall like NEPA pole and loud like Monday market.

     

    Now, Mr. Okon took his job very seriously. He wore his school uniform tighter than JAMB deadline and always carried a big cane he named "Judgment Day". The cane had sent many stubborn children into early repentance.

     

    One hot Tuesday afternoon, just as WAEC officials were coming to inspect the school, the village’s only generator — an old, coughing Tiger gen — refused to start.

     

    Headmaster Okon panicked. “God of chalk and bell, don’t disgrace me today o!”

     

    He called Musa, the school’s security man and part-time herbalist.

    “Musa, run and buy petrol!”

    “Sir, we don’t have money.”

    “Then pour small from your motorcycle!”

     

    Musa zoomed off. Ten minutes later, he returned holding one sachet of groundnut.

    “Sir, this is all I could buy with my balance.”

    “GROUNDNUT?! Are we fueling generator or frying akara?!”

     

    Desperate, Mr. Okon marched into the staff room, clapped his hands, and said, “All teachers must contribute N100. Today is not the day for village disgrace!”

     

    Teacher Florence hissed, “Even salary you’ve not paid us, now you want donation?”

    Another teacher shouted, “Let’s use mouth to blow the gen na!”

     

    Just then, the generator miraculously started on its own. Everyone looked at it like it had grown legs. Turns out a JSS 2 boy had quietly fixed it with a spoon and chewing gum.

    “Small mechanic,” they called him from that day.

     

    The WAEC officials came, looked around, and nodded. They even gave the school 5 stars — not for performance, but for unserious courage.

     

    As for Headmaster Okon, he added one new rule to the school board:
