Top 10 Best-Performing NGX Stocks in August 2025: Insurance Steals the Show

The Nigerian stock market closed August with just a tiny gain (+0.31%). The All-Share Index flirted with highs above 146,000 points mid-month before heavyweight selloffs dragged it down.

But while the big boys stumbled, penny and mid-cap stocks—especially insurers—turned August into a fireworks show.

Here’s your countdown of the top 10 performers that lit up the NGX.

    🔟 Ellah Lakes — +53.09%

From N9.21 to N17.65 before cooling off, Ellah Lakes was on fire thanks to expansion buzz: 1,500 new hectares for oil palm and 100 for animal husbandry. Already up 346% YTD, this agri-stock remains one to watch.

    9️⃣ Universal Insurance — +53.85%

Insurance stocks ruled August, and Universal was part of that party. With low entry prices and strong volume, it gave early believers a sweet ride.

    8️⃣ Linkage Assurance — +55.17%

Steady climbs, strong investor play. Linkage quietly stacked gains and showed why insurance names dominated the leaderboards.

    7️⃣ Coronation Insurance — +56.71%

Another insurer making waves. This one rewarded holders with a cool 56% boost in just one month.

    6️⃣ NCR Nigeria Plc — +59.31%

The outlier in this list. NCR, a tech solutions player, proved it could hold its own outside the insurance frenzy.

    5️⃣ Regency Alliance — +63.75%

Regency Alliance joined the insurance stampede, surging nearly 64% and showing how much appetite investors had for underdogs.

    4️⃣ Guinea Insurance — +65.12%

Momentum built up fast here, keeping Guinea in the top five. Proof that the smallest caps can deliver the loudest results.

    3️⃣ Veritas Kapital Assurance — +65.35%

Neck-and-neck with Guinea, Veritas capitalized on the insurance rally and closed August with over 65% gains.

    2️⃣ AIICO Insurance — +91.47%

One of the few bigger names in insurance that joined the rally. Investors piled in, and the stock nearly doubled in just 31 days.

    Mutual Benefits Assurance — +114.29%

The absolute winner. Mutual Benefits stole the show with a jaw-dropping 114% return in August. For context: N100k invested here at the start of the month became N214k by the 31st.

Big Takeaway: Insurance Led the Pack

While the overall market barely moved, insurance names dominated the charts. If August was a preview, the sector could be the surprise engine for retail investors heading into Q4.
