/ A boat carrying more than 100 passengers capsized in Niger State on September 2, claiming at least 60 lives and leaving many missing or injured. Most of the victims were women and children.

/ The tragedy was triggered when the overloaded vessel struck a submerged tree stump in the River Niger.

/ Only 50 survivors have been rescued. Around 10 others remain in serious condition, with several people still unaccounted for.

/ In response, the government is pushing a "No Life Jacket, No Travel" campaign and plans to distribute 42,000 life jackets nationwide to prevent similar disasters.

/ Such accidents are sadly frequent—safety rules like wearing life jackets often go unenforced. This tragedy underscores the urgent need for stronger enforcement and improved safety on waterways.
