There are three main types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic, each forming through distinct geological processes. Igneous rocks form from the cooling and solidification of molten rock (magma or lava). Sedimentary rocks are formed from layers of sediment, like sand, silt, and organic debris, that accumulate and harden over time. Metamorphic rocks are created when existing rocks are transformed by intense heat and pressure deep within the Earth.
