Part 1 – The Goodbye Under the Streetlight

     🌧

(The night is quiet, except for the sound of soft rain tapping against the pavement. John stands under the dim streetlight, holding an old umbrella. Kate approaches slowly, her steps heavy with hesitation.)

    John: Kate, you came…

Kate: Of course I came. You said you needed to talk.

John: I leave tomorrow… My transfer is confirmed. It’s the capital city this time. Thousands of miles away.

Kate: (swallowing hard) I thought maybe… maybe love would make them change their minds.

John: I tried, Kate. I begged my boss. I even thought about quitting… but you know my mother’s treatment depends on this job.

Kate: (voice trembling) So what happens to us, John? After three years… do we just say goodbye like strangers?

John: I’ll come back for you. I swear I will.

    Kate: People break promises, John.

John: Then I’ll break the world instead.

(A long silence. The rain gets heavier. Kate looks away, tears falling faster than the rain. John’s fingers twitch, wanting to wipe them away, but he doesn’t move.)

Kate: Do you remember the first time we met? In this same rain? You offered me your umbrella, even though you were shivering yourself.

John: How could I forget? That was the day my life found its reason.

Kate: And now… you’re leaving that reason behind.

(John’s chest tightens. He steps closer, close enough to smell her perfume mixed with rain.)

John: Kate, I’m not leaving you. I’m leaving to build a future with you.

Kate: You can’t build a future if you lose the person it’s for.

(Her words cut through him like glass. He watches her turn and start walking away. His voice cracks as he calls out…)

    John: Kate!

(She stops but doesn’t turn back. He knows this might be the last time he sees her…)

John: When the rain falls again… will you remember me?

Kate: (softly) I never forgot you, John… even before I met you.

(And then she walks away, disappearing into the blur of rain, leaving John under the streetlight — heartbroken, holding an umbrella that suddenly feels useless.)
