Maya’s hand hovered above the handle, her body trembling between fear and fascination. The whisper of her name still lingered in the air, curling around her like smoke.
Her flashlight sputtered and went out, plunging the hallway into darkness. Panic pressed against her chest, but then—just as quickly—the light flickered back on. The door now stood slightly open.
She hadn’t touched it.
A cold draft slipped through the gap, carrying with it the faint scent of roses, strangely fresh in the decaying mansion. Against all reason, she pushed the door wider and stepped inside.
The room was nothing like the rest of the house. No dust, no cobwebs. The bed was neatly made, curtains swayed gently though the windows were shut. On the dresser lay a silver locket, glowing faintly under her beam.
She picked it up. Inside was a picture of a young girl who looked… exactly like her.
Her breath caught.
Before she could make sense of it, the mirror on the wall rippled like water. And from within it, a figure slowly began to emerge—pale, graceful, with eyes as dark as midnight.
“Maya,” the voice whispered again, this time from lips she could see.
Her knees weakened. Whoever this was… they had been waiting for her.
