The wind howled through the empty streets of Amberville, carrying with it secrets no one dared to speak. To the townsfolk, the old Carter mansion was just another forgotten house, a shadow of history standing at the edge of the hill. But to Maya, it was different. She felt its presence every time she walked past—the way its windows seemed to watch her, the way the air grew colder near its gates.
That night, curiosity pulled her closer. Her friends often warned her, calling her “too brave for her own good,” but Maya’s heart never bowed to fear. As she stepped through the rusted gates, a strange silence swallowed the wind.
Inside, the mansion smelled of dust and forgotten years. Her flashlight trembled as it cut through the dark. Portraits of strangers lined the walls, their eyes following her every move.
Then she heard it.
A whisper. Soft. Almost like a sigh.
Her breath caught.
“Who’s there?” she asked, her voice shaking.
No answer. Only silence.
But the whisper returned—closer this time. Her heart pounded, but she didn’t run. Something in her bones told her she was meant to be here. That she was being called.
As she climbed the staircase, she noticed a door at the far end of the hallway. Unlike the others, it wasn’t covered in dust. Its handle gleamed as though someone had polished it yesterday. She reached for it slowly, her pulse echoing in her ears.
Just before her hand touched the handle, the whisper came again—clear, haunting, and unmistakable:
“Maya…”
Her name.
The flashlight flickered. She froze.
Someone—or something—inside that room already knew her.
