Her parents, hoping to give her a better education, sent her to live with her aunt and uncle because the only school in their village had closed. But instead of finding safety, Ochanya endured about five years of abuse from her uncle, Andrew Ogbuja, and his son, Victor, starting when she was just eight years old. The continuous trauma left her with severe health complications that eventually led to her death in October 2018. Her death sparked nationwide outrage and protests demanding justice. Yet today, both her uncle and his son — the main culprits — are walking free. The uncle was acquitted due to lack of evidence, and the son has never been captured. Only the aunt, Felicia Ogbuja, was convicted for negligence for failing to protect her. Ochanya’s story is a painful reminder of how poverty, silence, and weak systems endanger children.
